Jordan Peele’s new horror movie “Us” will kick off the 2019 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas on March 8.
Following the massive success of “Get Out”, which earned Peele an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and raked in over $255 million at the box office, “Us” follows a family who is confronted by an eerie group of doppelgangers while on vacation. Their peaceful getaway quickly takes an unnerving turn when the uninvited visitors arrive, destroying their fun-filled family getaway.
Written and directed by Peele, the hotly-anticipated film stars Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss, Winston Duke and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
It’s the second year in a row that the SXSW Film Festival, which runs through March 18, will open with a horror movie. Last year, John Krasinski’s buzz-worthy horror flick “A Quiet Place” launched the festival.
The “Us” trailer dropped on Christmas Day, starting fan theories that Peele’s new movie may be set in the same universe as “Get Out”. The director himself revealed he’s placed Easter Eggs in “Get Out” that will connect to his latest.
It’s a cinematic universe fans are ready to get behind as social media sleuths continue to dissect the imagery of the “Us” trailer.
Following its SXSW debut, “Us” will open in theatres on March 15.
