Octavian has claimed the mantle as one of the top voices in British music.
The rapper, who came to prominence after Drake posted a video of himself singing along to his single “Party Here” last year, has been announced as the winner of the BBC Music Sound of 2019 poll, according to Billboard.
Octavian is the first rapper since 50 Cent in 2003 to hit the top spot in the poll, which is voted on by more than 130 industry experts, DJs, festival bookers, critics and former winners.
“I get inspired and I try to make a new sound everyday,” Octavian said of the win. “It’s going to be a very loud year for me.”
Also making the top 5 – King Princess, Grace Carter, slow thai and Rosalia. Past winners include Adele, Sam Smith, Haim and Ellie Goulding.
Fans on Twitter congratulated Octavian on the win, noting his impressive backstory of achieving success after being homeless as a teenager.
