Katy Perry wasn’t exactly the star pupil in the religious school she attended as a child, and the “Roar” singer proved that by sharing a hilarious letter from her former school that outlines why the sixth-grade student, then 12, was being suspended.
Posted by the singer in an Instagram Story, the letter notes that Perry (who then went by Katy Hudson) was receiving a three-day suspension due to “inappropriate behaviour” involving a tree and, peripherally, Tom Cruise.
As the letter from Santa Barbara Christian School relates, Perry and some other students were “practicing a skit,” in which “Katy pretended that a tree was Tom Cruise and began making sexual motions (‘pelvic thrusts’) to the tree.”
Later, she was asked by teaching staff to “describe or demonstrate what she had been doing on the playground in front of other students,” and described her actions as being “like making out,” admitting “it was inappropriate.”
However, this was far from Perry’s first infraction. As the letter continues, the “suspension comes after several incidents and a clear warning” of her past misdeeds, which included “inappropriate language” (such as calling third-graders “brats”), “using the Lord’s name in vain,” and an admission she played “Spin the Bottle” and “Truth and Dare,” which “resulted in students kissing on the cheek.”
In addition, Perry had also been cited for exposing her midriff by wearing “crop tops,” and once performed the Macarena in a manner that had “sexual overtones,” with one teacher describing her performance as resembling “an exotic dancer.”
Perry offered her own commentary on the letter, writing, “When I was suspended in 6th grade for humping a tree and I guess other stuff.”
In a 2017 interview with Vogue, Perry didn’t have anything to say about her education that could be considered complimentary.
“The schools were really makeshift,” Perry said of being educated in religious schools. “Education was not the first priority. My education started in my 20s, and there is so much to learn still.”
