One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Super Bowl, and many viewers will tune in just for the halftime show.
Maroon 5 has the privilege of being this year’s headlining act, which keyboardist PJ Morton calls a “lifelong dream,” but this year in particular has a lot of controversies to go along with it.
After Rihanna reportedly turned down the gig, fans have now asked Maroon 5 to do the same to support Colin Kaepernick and his Take A Knee movement for racial equality.

Speaking to People, Morton said he believes there are many players “who support Kap and also do their job for the NFL.” He thinks his band can do the same, adding: “We just want to have a good time and entertain people while understanding the important issues that are at hand.”
For now, Maroon 5 is focusing on getting ready for the show and “blocking out the noise.”
When asked if he or the other bandmates plan on making a statement at the game, he said, “We’ll see, man… want to make sure we get the show down, and that’s the matter at hand right now.”
A petition was started to have the performers take a knee during halftime.
Travis Scott and Big Boi of Outkast will be joining the band for the performance on Feb. 3, 2019.
