Erykah Badu’s rant about R. Kelly soured her concertgoers.
The songstress began sharing her thoughts about Kelly during a concert in Chicago on Saturday night. Many of her audience members were not impressed.
“Say a prayer right now for R.” she said in footage obtained by TMZ, most likely referring to Kelly. “I hope he sees the light of day if he’s done all those things we’ve seen on TV.”
Members of the audience began shouting “F**k him!” That encouraged Badu to follow up with yet more controversial statements.
“That’s not love. What if one of the people who was assaulted by R Kelly grows up to become an offender?” Badu asked. “We gonna crucify them too? How do we do this? Just something to think about.”
“They’re about to R Kelly me to death on the Internet. I just want peace and love for everybody, healing for everybody,” she insisted. “Healing for those who’ve been hurt, because everyone who’s been involved has been hurt.”
Concertgoers could be heard begging Badhu to move on and some reportedly left the venue altogether.
Badu’s statements follow an eyebrow-raising post she shared several days ago on Instagram.
On Sunday night, Badu took to Twitter to clarify her comments, saying that she only wants “healing” for Kelly and the people he hurt.
The reaction to the singer’s defense was mixed.
