R. Kelly’s ex-wife sees two sides of the singer accused by numerous women of sexual assault and abuse.
Andrea Kelly appeared on “Good Morning Britain” Monday alongside her daughter Joann to talk about the allegations against her ex-husband in light of the “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary series.
Andrea told “GMB” co-host Piers Morgan that she understands Kelly because she was married to him for 13 years but that doesn’t mean she has “sympathy” for him.
“I’m a firm believer that just because you grew up in a household where abuse was prevalent and you were abused, it does not give you a free pass to be an abuser,” she said. “I know that coming forward brings validity to these young women and young girl’s stories.”
Andrea continued, saying the allegations “ring true to my life.”
Asked directly if she believes the allegations against Kelly, Andrea said, “I believe that he is abusive. I can’t confirm or deny these women’s stories because, again, I have not lived it personally. All I can say is what rings true to my life.”
Joann added that, for her, the news stories and allegations have been “very hard to digest.”
