Awards Season just got kicked into high gear.
On Tuesday morning, the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced, and as usual there were plenty of surprises and a lot of movie love to go around.

“Roma” and “The Favourite” came away the frontrunners with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. In fact, “The Favourite” received two nods for Supporting Actress for both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
“Vice” and “A Star is Born” each received eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. “Vice” was also nominated for Best Director for Adam McKay, while Lady Gaga was nominated for Best Actress, as well as Best Original Song for “Shallow”.
“Black Panther” came in with a strong showing of seven nods for Best Picture, as well as a slew of technical categories, including Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects and more.
Among the bigger surprises was “BlacKkKlansman” pulling in six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Adam Driver, and Best Director for Spike Lee.
Also a surprise was a nod for Best Director for Pawel Pawlikowski for his Polish film “Cold War”.
“Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” got five nominations each, including Best Picture.
Canada was well represented among the nominees, with the shorts “Animal Behaviour”, “Fauve”, “Marguerite” and “Bao” — the Pixar film directed by Torontonian Domee Shi — all being recognized.
