A fresh face has big shoes to fill as Tony Soprano in the “Sopranos” upcoming prequel movie.

The late James Gandolfini starred as Tony Soprano in the original series, which is notable as you may see a striking resemblance in the actor chosen to assume the mantle: Michael Gandolfini. That’s right, James’ son will star as Tony Soprano in the prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark”.

This was not a simple case of nepotism, according to Deadline. Insiders said there was an extensive audition process to cast Soprano. It was the younger Gandolfini’s Tony-like mannerisms, as well as his uncanny likeness, that snagged him the role.

Gandolfini, 19, caught the industry’s eye, thanks to his breakout role in “The Deuce”.

“The Many Saints of Newark” script was originally picked up by New Line Cinema in March 2018. Earlier this month, “The Conjuring” star Vera Farmiga and “The Punisher” lead Jon Bernthal were cast in the film.

The movie is currently in pre-production with no release date set in stone.
