In “Serenity”, Anne Hathaway stars as a woman who tracks down her estranged ex-husband (Matthew McConaughey) and asks him to protect their young son from her new husband (Jason Clarke) — by taking the guy on a fishing trip and pushing him overboard.
Critical response has been decidedly mixed. While some critics (including those for such outlets as the Chicago Sun-Times and the Globe and Mail)offered glowing reviews, others have not been so kind to the film, which has been described as “a mess” (New York Times), “amazingly awful” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “a spectacular misfire” (Austin Chronicle).

On Thursday, Hathaway took to Instagram to address the reviews, admitting that while “Serenity” may not be to everyone’s taste, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not worth watching.
“We keep it real around here: some critics get @serenityfilm and, like me, find it interesting, moving, ambitious and different, and for some it just doesn’t work,” she wrote.

“That’s cool- there is no failure, only learned events, not everyone has to like everything, and the critical response doesn’t change my feelings about the movie,” she continues. “However, other people’s time and money are not to be taken for granted, so I just want to be clear: I endorse the movie, many critics don’t 😉”
Moviegoers are invited to decide for themselves when “Serenity” opens on Friday, Jan. 25.
