In an unannounced visit to One25, a charity that helps sex workers get off the streets, Meghan Markle shared a tip she learned from a teacher in the United States.
Upon her visit with Prince Harry, the royal couple saw the group putting together care packages for the sex workers that included food, one of those being a banana.
“Do you have a Sharpie marker? I have an idea,” Markle asked. “I saw this project this woman had started somewhere in the States on a school lunch programme. On each of the bananas, she wrote an affirmation, to make the kids feel really, like, empowered. It was the most incredible idea – this small gesture.”
So the Duchess went straight to work writing messages of hope on each of the bananas.
She dubbed herself “in charge of the banana messaging!”
Some of the bananas read “You are loved” and”You are brave”.
Anna Smith, CEO of One25, commented after that the gesture really “touched” her.
A van will now drive around Bristol delivering the packed food as well as condoms, advice, blankets and hot water bottles.
Sam, a former sex worker and now volunteer at the foundation recons that “they might not eat it” as she figures the “banana [will] be at home until it is rotten. Because I would do the same.”
