Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell have a long history, appearing together on stage at Chicago’s Second City, co-starring in the short-lived sketch series “The Dana Carvey Show” and then as cast members on “The Daily Show”.
So when Colbert welcomed his longtime friend to Sunday’s special post-Super Bowl edition of “The Late Show”, he dug a little deeper than usual by getting into Carell’s “personal space,” conducting the chat with their heads inside a large cardboard box.
During the in-your-face interview, the two shared their first impressions of each other when they met 30 years ago and discussed whether Carell ever tires of people quoting “The Office” to him.

“No, I love it,” Carell told Colbert, who responded with Michael Scott’s signature comeback: “That’s what she said.”
Colbert also asked Carell why he, “one of the funniest people I know,” decided to become a dramatic actor. “All I want is to be respected and pretentious,” declared Carell.
“You’re halfway there,” quipped Colbert.
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on Global; you can also watch full episodes online.
