As the conversation about blackface continues in the public sphere, Joy Behar is the latest celebrity revealed to have engaged in the racist practice in the past.
In a 2016 clip from “The View” resurfaced by The Wrap‘s Jon Levine on Twitter, co-host Behar talks about a New York Times piece about how naturally curly hair had come back in style.
A photo of a 29-year-old Behar then comes on the screen, and her co-host Raven-Symone reacts in shock, “Is that you, Joy? Joy, are you black? Joy — are you my auntie, Joy?”
Behar explains, “It was a Halloween party, I went as a beautiful African woman.”
“Yeah, but you ain’t black,” Symone says, to which Behar responds, “But that’s my hair.”
Through the commotion, Behar asks, “Why are you upset with me now?”
Symone asks her, “Did you have tanning lotion on,” at which point Behar admits, “I had makeup that was a little bit darker than my skin.”
“The View” episode was originally reported by Jezebel at the time.

In the last week, the Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam has come under fire for a picture on his medical school yearbook page of a man in blackface standing with a man dressed as a KKK member. The Attorney General of Virginia also later admitted that he once dressed in blackface at a party in 1980 when he was 19.
In October last year, “Today” host Megan Kelly caused controversy by defending dressing in blackface, leading to her termination from NBC News and a reported $30 million payout.
Behar has not yet responded to the resurfaced clip.
