U2’s front man sat in front of a Senate subcommittee today, asking for swift action to take place in aiding the refugees in Europe.

With his words, Bono drew a realistic picture of the life refugees live, fleeing their homes and going so far as to cross the Mediterranean sea for a safer place, where hundreds die along the way.

The 55-year-old urged lawmakers to confront this “existential threat”; and look at foreign aid as national security rather than charity.

“When aid is structured properly, with a focus on fighting poverty and improving governance, it could just be the best bulwark we have against the extremism of our age,”; Bono explains.
