During the MusiCares gala that honoured the country legend Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes took to the stage to perform “Islands In The Stream.”

Cyrus told Variety that she reached out to Mendes to see if he was interested in collaborating.

“I actually sent him a DM and said I don’t know what you’re trying to do next because I’ve actually been in his position in his career too before where you’re someone who I think is trying to fit into pop music,” adding that she also knows he probably “wants to do [his] own thing.”

Mark Ronson joined the duo for the performance.

Fans expected that the two were working together when Cyrus posted pictures of herself working on Grammy rehearsals when someone recognised a guitar and equipment with Mendes’ name on it in the background.

She then posted another photo of the two of them with Mendes in a Parton jacket and the caption, “this could be the year for the real thing” which a lyric from “Islands In The Stream.”

Cyrus and Mendes will also perform together during the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10.
