Rachel Brosnahan agrees here character in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is not winning any parenting awards.
Brosnahan, 28, responded to a fan who critiqued Midge Maisel’s parenting on Twitter. “As a viewer, we can’t sit and say to the TV, ‘love her, but she’s a terrible mom!” a fan of the show argued.
“Absolutely,” Brosnahan replied. “I’m not sure I would go as far as terrible, however, she’s certainly not winning ‘parent of the year.'”
“But it also doesn’t change the fact that this was not one of the primary criticisms of Don Draper [‘Mad Men’] or Walter White [‘Breaking Bad’],” the actress argued. “Who were similarly, single-mindedly ambitious.”
Brosnahan followed up in a separate tweet. “This is a comedy. Midge isn’t evil but she’s sometimes blinded by her own privilege and can be self-involved when it comes to the pursuit of her new dream,” she continued. “Her life as a mother is not the primary focus of our story.”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won five awards at last year’s Emmys and Brosnahan won Best Actress at this year’s Golden Globes.
