No band in rock history has been so successful while engendering so much animosity as Nickelback — but why?
That’s what researcher Salli Anttonen tried to figure out by commencing a study of more than a decade’s worth of Nickelback reviews, reports BBC News.

As Anttonen found out, early reviews of the Canadian rockers were generally quite good, but became worse over time in direct proportion to the band’s growing success.
A deciding moment, she found out, may have been when Nickelback licensed a song to be used in a furniture commercial, which resulted in anger about their “authenticity.”;

Ultimately, the study found that hatred towards Nickelback comes, ironically enough, from the band’s ability to give fans what they want.
“Nickelback is too much of everything to be enough of something,”; she writes. “They follow genre expectations too well, which is seen as empty imitation.”;
