Those flowers probably were not from Tom Petty.
Cardi B thanked the deceased singer for sending her flowers and a letter after she won Best Rap Album at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. What Cardi failed to realize, however, is that Petty died in 2017.
“Thank you, Tom Petty, for the flowers,” Cardi said in a now-deleted Instagram post. “I left the room but the flowers were very big. I want to say thank you so much… “Motherf**kers love me, bro!” She also thanked Petty for the “beautiful note” which read, “You’ve got a big heart. So big it could crush this town.”
Fans of Petty might have now pieced together what went wrong. The “note” consists of lyrics from Petty’s 1996 song, “Walls (Circus)”. His name at the bottom of the letter is most likely an attribution.
According to TMZ, the identity of the mystery sender is actually celebrity florist Annie Wonderlich, owner of boutique Art Fleur, who apparently sent a Grammy bouquet to Lady Gaga as well. Cardi is said to be one of Wonderlich’s clients.
TMZ shared a photo which show the flowers contained a handwritten note from Wonderlich who wished Cardi luck at the Grammys.
Cardi’s now-deleted thank-you to Petty amused the heck out of the Twitterverse.
Cardi is only the second woman to ever win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The prize, which was awarded for her work on Invasion of Privacy, is Cardi’s first-ever Grammy.
