Dave Grohl Says Billie Eilish Is Proof That ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Is Not Close To Dead’

17-year-old singer-songwriter Billie Eilish can now count Dave Grohl among her many admirers.

Speaking with Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino at Tuesday’s Pollstar Live Conference in Los Angeles, the Foo Fighters frontman praised the “Ocean Eyes” singer, comparing the buzz surrounding her with Nirvana’s first brush with success in 1991.

“My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish,” Grohl declared, as reported by Billboard. “The same thing is happening with her that happened with Nirvana in 1991. People say, ‘Is rock dead?’ When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, rock ‘n’ roll is not close to dead!”

Before giving Eilish his seal of approval, Grohl, 50, reminisced about the first time he saw Nirvana on stage before taking over as the band’s drummer.

“I saw them at a show and I thought, That’s Nirvana. Oh my God,” he said. “With [Grohl’s previous band] Scream, we never had anything successful. Nirvana had great songs. ‘About a Girl’ was like a Beatles song. It was clear that dude [Kurt Cobain] could write songs.”

After Cobain’s 1994 suicide, Grohl admitted he “didn’t want to play music again” until he eventually returned to the studio for the first Foo Fighters album the following year.

As Grohl explained, he never envisioned the band would continue as long as they have. “The first 20 years of our band, I thought, Let’s make another record and call it a day. Get one more in there. Now we can’t break up. Imagine grandparents getting a divorce. I’m sure it happens, but you’d be like, ‘Why?’”

As for Eilish, this isn’t the first time that Grohl has expressed his fandom; back in October, he and daughter Violet covered her song “idontwannabeyouanymore” — watch:
