Avril Lavigne, 34, and Chad Kroeger split in 2015 but as she tells People: “Chad and I are super close.”
Lavigne, who is thought to have been dating Phillip Sarofim since last April, tells the magazine how the Nickelback singer helped write her Head Above Water album track “Warrior”, which is about her ongoing struggle with Lyme disease.
Lavigne explains, “I’m really grateful to have had someone like him in my life who cared while I was getting back up on my feet.
“He took me under his wing, he got me in the studio, he recorded me, he was very encouraging. He helped me with some of the songs that I wrote because he’s such a good songwriter — I’d be stuck on a lyric or stuck on a part, and he’d help me finish a song if I couldn’t and he would record it.
“He’s just always been a cheerleader of mine and always been such a huge fan. He’s in my corner, he’s on my side, and he’s always been really great,” she adds of her ex-husband. The pair were together for two years.
Lavigne says of her life now: “I’m in a good place. It’s important to live your life to the fullest every day.”
Kroeger isn’t the only ex Lavigne has remained close to — she remains friendly with Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley. The pair split in 2009 after three years together.
The Canadian musician has been busy promoting her latest LP, recently performing the title track on Wednesday’s “Tonight Show”.
