Anthony Hamilton Nails NBA All-Star National Anthem Performance A Year After That Fergie Backlash

Anthony Hamilton got quite the reaction online after he belted out his own version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game.

The 48-year-old was immediately praised by Twitter users, who compared the performance to Marvin Gaye’s much-talked-about 1983 rendition.

Hamilton’s version went down much better than that of his predecessor Fergie, with NBA players actually laughing out loud as she tried something new with the anthem last year.

Fergie previously released a statement to apologize after her performance was slammed on social media.

She said in the message obtained by ET Canada at the time: “I’ve always been honoured and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA.

“I’m a risk taker artistically but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
