Paul Shaffer played the piano while speaking to Jimmy Fallon about his many accomplishments on Monday’s “Tonight Show”.
Shaffer, 69, from Thunder Bay, Ont., told Fallon how he was “noodling” – aka. playing lounge-style music – as the talk-show host questioned him about his career as a musician in comedy.
The Canadian-born star explained how he was on the first five years of “Saturday Night Live”, as well as being David Letterman’s famous bandleader and sidekick.
Shaffer said of Letterman: “When I went in for my first meeting [with David] he said ‘You know I used to see you on ‘SNL’ doing those Bill Murray lounge sketches.’ I think that may have been what got me the job.”
Shaffer also discussed being spoofed by “Family Guy” and how he wrote “It’s Raining Men” during the interview.
He then recalled how his mom was the one that actually made him start playing the piano.
The musician explained, “My mother said to her neighbours and friends, ‘That kid is going to take piano lessons… over my dead body!’ That’s the kind of mother I had. And I thank her to this day.”
