The Jussie Smollett saga reached its peak on Thursday with the announcement of the “Empire” actor’s arrest and celebrities are weighing in.
The 36-year-old turned himself in to Chicago police early Thursday morning on a felony disorderly conduct charge for filing a false police report claiming he had been attacked in a purported hate crime.
Chicago police held a press conference following the arrest revealing that Smollett has orchestrated the hoax attack, along with a fake hate letter he had addressed to himself at the Fox studio lot, “because he was dissatisfied with his salary.”
The news of Smollett’s arrest led to plenty of reaction online.
Donald Trump tweeted about the arrest, asking about the “MAGA” supporters Smollett apparently insulted with his hoax.
Patton Oswalt expressed his anger at Smollett for feeding into Trump’s rhetoric.
Tyler Perry posted about the situation on Facebook, writing that he is “lost for words,” but also turning attention to other cases involving possible crimes against people of colour that have not received as much media attention.
Others, including “Surviving R. Kelly” director Dream Hampton, expressed similar concern over the amount of attention police paid to the Smollett case over other crimes.
Donald Trump Jr. also tweeted about the press conference.
Others simply made jokes about the situation.
