Being nominated for an Academy Award would be like nothing else, an experience that very few get to experience. Unfortunately for some of this year’s nominees, they were so close but so far.

Alexander Shuckburgh, one of the writers behind the nominated song “All The Stars” from “Black Panther,” will have to sit out because the Academy limits the number of nominees in the best original song category to four. There were five writers on this song including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Anthony Tiffith and Mark Spears.

So while Shuckburgh put the work in, he won’t be able to officially call himself an “Oscar-nominated songwriter” since he is that fifth person.

Linda Moran, the president of Songwriters Hall of Fame, says “it is definitely not fair to limit the number of writers.”

“If the PROs (performing rights organisations) have a writer listed, and that writer is receiving royalties from them for the song, there is no question that the writer be acknowledged along with the others,” she continued while talking to The Associated Press.

Shuckburgh has previously won a Grammy for co-writing Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” He also has a Golden Globes nominations for “All The Stars.”

“In order for an organization to be relevant, it is important that it be flexible and willing to move forward,” Moran added.
