It seems Jussie Smollett’s run-in with the law will indeed impact his career on “Empire”.
The show’s producers have opted to drop Smollett, 36, from all remaining episodes of “Empire” season five. The actor was arrested on Thursday on multiple felony charges stemming from the alleged attack he reported last month.
“The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us,” said executive producers Lee Daniels, Danny Strong, Brett Mahoney, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Francie Calfo and Dennis Hammer on Friday morning.
“Jussie has been an important member of our ‘Empire’ family for the past five years and we care about him deeply,” they added, per Deadline. “While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out.”
“We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season,” the statement concluded.
Legendary African-American singer and actress Leslie Uggams shared the statement on Instagram, and added some words of wisdom, reminding that Smollett remains innocent until proven guilty.
Smollett is charged with orchestrating the alleged homophobic and racist attack he reported he was the victim of on Jan. 29.
Smollett was released Thursday on $100,000 bail and has had his passport revoked. He is due back in court in March.
