Fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novels are looking forward to the upcoming BBC television adapation, and Sunday brought a first look at the trailer for the upcoming series (set to air on HBO in North America).

“We wanted fans to have a tiny glimpse of ‘His Dark Materials’. As with Lyra, there are many more worlds to discover as we start upon this epic journey,” said Jane Tranter, executive producer for the series’ production company, Bad Wolf, said in a statement.

According to the official synopsis, the series will follow the adventures of orphan Lyra Belacqua, who lives in a parallel universe, as she embarks on a quest to find her kidnapped friend and subsequently discovers a nefarious plot to kidnap children.

Director Tom Hooper is helming the anticipated adaptation of the trilogy, which stars James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby, Clarke Peters as The Master, and Dafne Keen as Lyra.

While no premiere date has yet been set, look for “His Dark Materials” to debut later this year.
