A video showing Mahershala Ali playing basketball as a college kid resurfaced online after his big Oscar win Sunday.
The 45-year-old, who bagged the Best Supporting Actor gong for his role in “Green Book”, could be seen taking the court as part of the St. Mary’s College of California team when he was a student over 20 years ago.
Ali was previously known as Hershal Gilmore, with the NCAA’s Twitter profile stating he was a 6 ft 4 guard.
The star previously spoke about attending college on a basketball scholarship before attending NYU grad school for acting in an interview with GQ.
He said back in 2016: “It was about getting a basketball scholarship to a Division I school. Once I got that, I didn’t set a realistic next goal on how to get to the NBA, which is perhaps for the best.
“I fell into acting. A teacher gave me an opportunity to be in a play and it came a little easy to me. When it got difficult was when I decided to study acting and I went to grad school. I felt like, if I got [into NYU] this was what I was supposed to pursue. It just so happened that it worked out.”
