The new film is a sequel to the original two movies and will be directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original film’s director Ivan Reitman. The project has been in development for some time under the codename “Rust City”, and Sony released a teaser for “Ghostbusters 3” in January.
Reitman was reportedly concerned about casting anyone from “Stranger Things”, considering the similarity between the two franchises; however, Reitman and the film’s executives were “blown away by Wolfhard’s audition.

“Ghostbusters” fans are predictably on edge about the new film following the major backlash to 2016’s female-led “Ghostbusters” reboot. Reitman, a huge fan of the franchise, has promised to do right by fans.
Production on “Ghostbusters 3” is scheduled to wrap up in 2020. Reitman is expected to follow up with an animated movie told from the ghost’s perspective for Sony Pictures Animated.
