Fans of the National are celebrating the band’s announcement that a new album is on the way, the group’s first studio effort since 2017’s Sleep Well Beast.
Titled I Am Easy to Find, the new album will be accompanied by a 24-minute short film from director Mike Mills, starring Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander (you can watch a brief trailer above).
According to the band’s website, the short film “is not the video for the [album],” while the album “is not the soundtrack to the [film].”
In a statement, Mills explains that the film focuses on “playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other,” adding that “they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019 but don’t necessarily need one another.”
As for the album, the National are joined by a number of female recording artists, including Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan and Mina Tindle.
“Yes, there are a lot of women singing on this, but it wasn’t because, ‘Oh, let’s have more women’s voices,'” frontman Matt Berninger said in a statement. “It was more, ‘Let’s have more of a fabric of people’s identities.’ It would have been better to have had other male singers but my ego wouldn’t let that happen.”
As a bonus for fans, the National have released the first single from the upcoming album; the song is called “You Had Your Soul with You” and you can give it a listen below:
Meanwhile, the band has also announced plans to tour North America and Europe, kicking off in Paris on April 16. Canadian dates include stops in Toronto (April 24), Montreal (June 21), Hamilton (June 22) and Vancouver (Aug. 28).
