Jesse Eisengerg’s latest film will be making its debut at SXSW on Sunday, March 10, and in advance of the new flim’s world premiere, Bleeker Street Films has just released a new trailer.
Eisenberg portrays a fearful man who was recently the victim of a random attack and finds himself attracted to the dojo of a mysterious sensei (Allesandro Nivola) in hopes of learning karate.
“I’m afraid,” Eisenberg’s character explains when asked why he wants to pursue martial arts. “I’m afraid of the dark. I’m afraid of other men. They intimidate me. I want to be what intimidates me.”
However, the film’s comedic tone quickly becomes evident when the sensei reveals the question is actually multiple choice; he settles on “A) health and fitness.”
“A dark comedy set in the world of karate,” is how “The Art of Self-Defense” is described in its official synopsis.
“The film centres on Casey (Jesse Eisenberg), who is attacked at random on the street and enlists in a local dojo led by a charismatic and mysterious sensei (Alessandro Nivola), in an effort to learn how to defend himself,” the synopsis continues. “What he uncovers is a sinister world of fraternity, violence and hypermasculinity and a woman (Imogen Poots) fighting for her place in it. Casey undertakes a journey, both frightening and darkly funny, that will place him squarely in the sights of his enigmatic new mentor.”
No release date has yet been set, but look for “The Art of Self-Defense” to hit theatres later this year.
