Mumford & Sons surprised audience members in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday night with a tribute to hometown favourites Nine Inch Nails.
The U.K. folk-rock band performed an acoustic rendition of “Hurt” from NIN’s iconic 1994 album The Downard Spiral, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this past Friday.
Frontman Marcus Mumford gave a shout-out to NIN, as well as Johnny Cash, who released a sombre take on Trent Reznor’s original version of “Hurt” in 2002.
“Thank you, Cleveland for Nine Inch Nails. And thank you to the U.S. for Johnny Cash,” Mumford said before launching into their rendition, which could be described as a cross between Reznor and Cash’s versions.
Mumford & Sons are currently in North America as part of their “Delta” tour. The band’s fourth album, Delta, was released in November 2018.
