Alyssa Milano’s International Women’s Day tweet fell short of the mark for some fans.

The “Charmed” actress supported her fellow women on International Women’s Day with a tweet reading, “My transgender sisters! I am celebrating YOU this #NationalWomensDay.”

That tweet did not raise eyes so much as her follow-up tweet. After being asked if she was transgender, Milano replied, “I’m trans. I’m a person of colour. I’m an immigrant. I’m a lesbian. I’m a gay man. I’m the disabled. I’m everything. And so are you, Kirk. Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know or understand. No one wants to hurt you. We are all just looking for our happily ever after.”

Fans reacted in droves, shunning Milano for identifying as transgender, a lesbian, and so forth. They argued she has not faced the challenging experiences many of these demographics have.

“I’m glad this tweet invoked conversation. I’m so sorry it offended some,” Milano later apologized. “I see you and hear you. But just a reminder, empathy is not a bad thing. Nuance is important and literal interpretation is not always intended. And I can identify with and not identify as. Both are powerful.”

She then quoted the Persian poet Rumi, who wrote, “This is a subtle truth. Whatever you love, you are.” That did not solve all of Milano’s problems. Some users noted how Rumi’s quote was used out of context and the poem is about greed.
