Country singer Cameron Hawthorn addresses his sexuality in his new music video for his song “Dancing in the Living Room”.
“I’m extremely proud to release this today,” Hawthorn wrote about the video, which features the singer playing guitar on a TV screen as couples dance along in their respective living rooms.
At the end of the video, Hawthorn returns home after his gig to the arms of his partner. The couple then share a dance.
Hawthorn came out as gay publicly back in November after seeing the movie “Boy Erased,” which is about a gay teenager pressured into attending conversion therapy.
“I saw [Boy Erased] with one of my friends who is gay. This movie is about standing up for who you are in the face of people who want to deny you of your truth. My friend does that each and every day … But you see, I’m also gay,” he wrote. “And I haven’t felt like I could say that proudly until very recently.”
The video for “Dancing in the Living Room” is the next step of that journey. “I dreamt of making this video after writing [the song], and I honestly never really knew if I would,” Hawthorn explained on Instagram.
“I remember always thinking how special it was to dance freely with my boyfriend in the living room of our apartment – being gay, it’s not as easy to dance as a couple in public together as it is for a straight couple,” he told the Advocate.
“I wanted to express how special that moment is for a couple, when it’s just the two of you in the privacy of your own four walls.”
Hawthorn also thanked fans for their warm reception to the video.
