San Jose Sharks player Evander Kane has been absent from the team lineup for the past few games, and on Thursday he explained the heartbreaking reason why: he and his wife lost their unborn baby at 26 weeks.
“As expecting parents, this past week has broken us,” wrote Kane in a statement he shared on Twitter, adding, “My family and I are heartbroken. Words cannot express how excited we were to welcome our baby girl into the world and watch her grow.”
Writing directly to his daughter, whom the couple named Eva, he continued: “And though we are devastated that you couldn’t stay with us longer, your mom and I will always cherish the time we had with your beautiful soul. Your spirit will give us strength, your love will give us comfort. We will love you forever.”
Following Kane’s announcement, the NFL and its players offered support and condolences.
