The apple did not fall far from the tree in Alicia Keys’ household, and she proved that during Thursday night’s iHeartRadio Music Awards when she invited son Egypt Dean onstage.
The 8-year-old son of the “Girl on Fire” singer and her husband, rapper Swizz Beatz, joined his mother onstage, sitting at the piano and tinkling the ivories for a mother-and-son performance as she sang “Raise a Man” and “You Don’t Know My Name”.
As the performance came to an end, the pair held hands and walked to the front of the stage — and, because kids will be kids, Egypt capped off his performance by doing a little flossing while his mom waved her hand in the air.
“This is such a special night tonight and we are blessed to share it with you,” Keys told the crowd.
It was a big night for Keys, who was also awarded with the iHeartRadio Innovator Award.
“It means so much to be honoured as an innovator. When I first started out, nobody was like, ‘Look at that tomboy from Hell’s Kitchen… what a fantastic innovator she is,’” she joked. “Nobody said that.”
Continuing he speech, she zeroed in on the importance of being true to oneself. “We hate ourselves, and instead, all we have to do is love who we are,” she told the crowd.
