Sam Smith is opening up about his gender identity.
The “Lay Me Down” singer has said in the past that he does not identify as any one gender, and in a new conversation with Jameela Jamil on her show “I Weigh Interviews” he talked about being non-binary.
“You do not identify in a gender. You are just you…you are your own special creation. That is how I take it,” Smith said about himself. “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between — somewhat on the spectrum.”
He continued, “I’ve always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind…I do think like a woman in my head at times. I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is.”
Smith reflected on how he thinks about his sexuality in relation to his gender identity, telling Jamil, “I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality. I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender…when I move, when I have sex with men, it’s very feminine. I’m feminine in many ways — and I’ve resented that.”
On the subject of his weight, Smith said that he was teased growing up because of his body shape.
“I was holding a lot of weight in my chest,” he said, explaining that he had “breasts” due to excess estrogen.
It got to the point that he actually had liposuction as a child.
“I had liposuction, I was 12 years old,” Smith said. “At the time I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I haven’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”
