Drake Drops ‘Views’, Talks Love For Toronto, Rihanna, The Weeknd And Reveals He No Longer Talks To Nicki Minaj

Minutes after releasing his hotly-anticipated “Views”, Drake sat down with DJ Zane Lowe for a session of “OVO Sound Radio” live from Toronto, where the rapper opened up about the album’s connection to the city, his chemistry with Rihanna, and his friendship with Nicki Minaj.

“The album is based around the change of the seasons in our city,” Drake said, noting Toronto’s bright summers and harsh winters. “I didn’t run away to Miami” to make this album.

“Realizing that the details and the little things about your upbringing and your culture are actually extremely appealing to the world if you present them” well, “there’s really nothing cooler than this,” he added. “This album is a blatant display of being proud of where I’m from.”

With “Views”; bound to be a massive success, Drake reflected on what’s to come by praising the big year of fellow Toronto star The Weeknd. “At the end of the day, that’s my guy,”; he said. “We’re from the same city. We grew up with the same goal trying to do this. A lot of the time we spent trying to do this together. We spent real time. We put in real work together. I’m proud of his success.”;

Beyond the album’s strong ties to Toronto, the artist also reveals just how deep he delved emotionally on the 20-track album. “I just feel like I told everybody how I’m actually feeling,” he reveals, about his most personal album yet, which features Future, Popcaan, Pimp C, Wizkid, PARTYNEXTDOOR, dvsn and one track produced by Kanye West. “It’s a tough thing to access.” On another personal note, the 29-year-old rapper also touched up his professional and personal relationship with Rihanna. “It wouldn’t be a record without Rihanna…we do well together as a team,” he shared, before talking about his new track with the Barbadian beauty, “Too Good”.

“She got in the studio and just bodied it. It’s just another piece to add to our catalog. I think we do great music together. I think that’s what makes the collaborations better,”; he said. “We’re not forcing anything…We have a lot of genuine energy between us.”

Drake’s tone turned noticeably somber when he tackled his feud with Meek Mill and the ensuing end of his close friendship with Nicki Minaj. “I don’t really talk to Nicki,” he revealed. “I have a lot of love for, a lot of respect for her and the past and what we built. I understand what love is, and I understand a personal situation. She dealt with me how I would expect her to—with class.”;

“There were times I was sitting there, waiting to see you know, “how deep is your love?'”; he wondered. “But it’s all good…Unfortunately, we haven’t spoken.”

And moving on to yet another female chart-topper, Drake couldn’t hide his love for Taylor Swift and her ode to “Jumpman”;. Praising the pop singer for going through with the Apple ad, he said: “I love Taylor…she’s such a sweetheart. She’s so angelic to me, man.”

But back to the music. “Views”, Drake says, is the proudest moment of his career when it comes to songwriting and vocals. “This album is probably my highest level of vocal performance,” he explained. “I was listening to Stevie Wonder “All I Do’ and Alabama Shakes.”

“I clicked out in the sense of the songwriting,” he added.

Finally, with “Views” barely out for an entire hour, the Toronto-native is already setting his sights on the big screen. “I’d love to go back to acting,” he told Lowe, revealing aspirations to star in films one day. “That’s the goal.”
