Yesterday across the pond, Britain acknowledged its’ burgeoning musical talent at the 2013 Brit Awards. The awards show was rife with drama we’ve got the lowdown on some of the highlights of the night.
Ever heard of a young up and coming singer named Emeli Sandé? Well, you will now. After receiving a major boost appearing at the London Games opening and closing ceremonies last summer, the “Next To Me”; singer picked up Best British Female Artist and Best Album awards for 2013.
“I think I’m a very unlikely pop star,”; an emotional Sandé told the packed arena. “This is an album I wrote because I didn’t have the confidence to sing these things in person. This is a dream really so thank you for this year and that you for this award. I’m so grateful,”; the singer told the audience, capping her night with a medley performance of her songs “Clown”; and “Next To Me”;.
Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake shook, shimmied and swaggered his way through his song “Mirrors”;, continuing his pop comeback ahead of the March release of his first album since 2006, The 20/20 Experience. And it wasn’t necessarily JT’s performance that made social media noise. Wife, Jessica Biel’s tweet, “My Huz just killed it on the Brits and the London fans are the tits!”; made quite the flutter on Twitter.
Taylor Swift performed in front of Harry Styles. Yes, that’s right, Taylor took to the stage in an elaborate white gown and sang her little heart out to “I Knew You Were Trouble”;, while her ex watched from the audience. In response to Taylor’s performance, Harry had nothing but rave reviews, telling reporters, “I thought her performance was really good. She looked great.”
Adele proved once again that she doesn’t take herself too seriously, poking fun at her Brit Award fiasco from last year while accepting the award for Best Single for “Skyfall”; via satellite (the singer is currently in LA rehearsing for the Oscars on Sunday night).
And in a completely shocking turn of events, Mumford And Sons beat out One Direction for Best British Group, taking to the stage to perform “I Will Wait”;. But never fear One Directioners, the boy band took home their own accolade, being honoured with the Brits Global Success Award and of course, garnering the loudest screams of the night.
