The beauty and brains, who has an Oxford law degree, can currently be seen in “Captain Marvel,” but has carved time out of her busy schedule to chat with Allure about representation in film and fashion.

The “Crazy Rich Asians” alum is active in her community including being involved with the Justice and Equality Fund.  “You have to attack [the problem] on a regulatory level while also trying to change the culture,” adding that is will “take time.”

“I love opening up a magazine and seeing a whole mixture of body types, grey hair, dark skin, wrinkles — we’re saying that we find these things beautiful,” the actress says.

Chan also starred in “Mary Queen Of Scots” as Bess of Hardwick, a role that the internet had problems with a Chinese actor playing.

Speaking about the incident, Chan said, “Why are actors of colour, who have fewer opportunities anyway, only allowed to play their own race? And sometimes they’re not even allowed to play their own race. In the past, the role would be given to a white actor who would tape up their eyes and do the role in yellowface…. I feel like “Hamilton” opened minds a lot. We have a black man playing George Washington. They describe it as ‘America then, told by America now.’ And I think our art should reflect life now.”

Chan teamed up with British actress Ruth Wilson and the British Film Institute to help drama students learn how to protect themselves in compromising audition situations.

“What’s going to be expected of you if you have to do a sex scene? What if you get asked to do something you’re not comfortable with? How can you say no?” Chan says. “These are things they don’t teach you in drama school.”

Chan also let her silly side show as she tried nine things she had never tried before, including asking a Magic 8 ball “Is Brexit going to happen?”. “Outlook not so good” the ball revealed.

Makeup using a puppet, a tea party with a near and re-enacting “The Princess Bride” are among the other things Chan tried. You can watch the full clip above.
