UPDATE:

Caesar has now issued an apology for his statements via Instagram Live.

He admits that his comments were “very pretentious,” adding “I was talking down to you guys. I apologize for how I expressed my idea. I believe in what I said… I can admit when I’m wrong.””

In the apology, he further says, “Me and my friends we agree with the sentiment and there was no one there to challenge our ideas. That’s also dangerous. It was a very tyrannical rant because a tyrant doesn’t have people around checking him. Honestly, I’m glad this happened because I feel like I’m coming full circle. This sh*t has been hurting me so I feel like I’m stronger because of this. This is hurting my ego right now – I don’t like apologizing because I feel like I’ve been doing it for so long.”

Daniel Caesar is receiving backlash after some comments he made on Instagram.

The Grammy-winning R&B artist, 23, went live on the photo-sharing platform on Tuesday night while admittingly “drunk as f**k” and slammed trolls after influencer YesJulz.

“Why are we being so mean to Julz?” he said, in reference to comments she made on a recent episode of the “Easily Offended” podcast. “Why are we being so mean to white people right now? That’s a serious question.”

The Oshawa-born singer added, “Why is it that we’re allowed to be disrespectful and rude to everybody else and when anybody returns any type of energy to us . . . That’s not equality. I don’t wanna be treated like I can’t take a joke.”

Caesar later referenced Chappelle, who called him “very gay” on John Mayer’s “Current Mood” Instagram show, “I just went through that fu**ing Chappelle s**t and I had to in the moment acknowledge that I was being fu**ing sensitive and that I need to be able to take a joke just like everybody else. That’s what it is. People are allowed to say whatever the f**k they want.”

Just days after posting to Instagram live, “Pod Save The People” host Deray claims to have spoken to Caesar about his controversial comments.

In a couple of tweets posted Thursday, Deray alleges Caesar is “learning and growing,” “I spoke with Daniel Caesar yesterday morning for a few hours as I was troubled by many of his statements from the Instagram video. In the end, it is clear that he’s learning and growing and understanding systemic racism and has more work to do. And he has begun to do that work.”

In a second tweet, he added, “We had a frank conversation about how his statements disappointed many, reinforced a set of beliefs that did not aid the work of racial equity and highlighted opportunities to learn. We were both pushed in the convo and it was good. I look forward to seeing him continue to reflect/grow.”

Fans on Twitter slammed the singer for his comments:
