Diane Kruger and her “The Walking Dead” actor partner Norman Reedus welcomed their baby daughter in November, but the new mom reveals she endured a difficult year before winding up where she is now.
In an interview with iNews, the 42-year-old actress reveals she found herself in “a dark place” in 2017 after ending her 10-year relationship with Vancouver-born actor Joshua Jackson.
As she explains, winning the Best Actress award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for her role in “In The Fade” came in the midst of a difficult period.
“I was in such a dark place,” she tells iNews. “I had two really close family deaths that year, I was separating from my partner of 10 years. There was just a lot of darkness and personal loss. Then the role was very dark.”
Admitting that the award felt “superficial,” she adds that “people saw that it was not just another movie for me. There is something about grief and loss that lets you see how uncompassionate we are as a society, including myself. You watch TV and you become so numb to somebody else’s misery.”
Her latest role in “The Operative”, playing a woman recruited by the Israeli Mossad to work undercover in Iran, was a far more positive experience for her — because she was pregnant with her daughter while the movie was being made.
“It was definitely a special experience being pregnant when filming,” says Kruger. “It will always be a special movie because of that; she is in every scene.”
However, Kruger says that the most important role of her life is motherhood. “Let’s not f**k that one up,” she jokes.
