The real star of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s latest tour of Australia was Daphne Dunne.
The war widow has met Prince Harry three times, showing up to all of his latest engagements to support him and his wife, Meghan Markle.
In return, the duke and duchess have sent a surprise to Dunne, who turns 99 on Friday.
Dunne, who was in the hospital for her birthday, told the Today show that Harry “wouldn’t even think of [sending her anything].”
She was wrong.
The letter from the royal couple said, “My wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday.“
He added that they hope she has “a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends” and that she has “managed to escape hospital.”
Michelle Haywood, Dunne’s daughter, said they emailed Harry about her mother’s birthday and received a reply overnight, which they were “so excited” for.
As for how Dunne made Prince Harry such a big fan? “I just threw him a kiss and he came,” she said.
The Duchess of Sussex also became a big fan of Dunne when Harry introduced the two of them outside the Sydney Opera House back in October. “I’m so glad I got to meet you,” Markle told Dunne. “Harry has told me all about you and your special bond. It’s so lovely you came to see us, thank you.”
She then complimented Dunne on her pink hair and sneakers.
