“Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes took aim at Vice-President Mike Pence and “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett at the GLAAD Media Awards on Thursday night.
Allison Janney presented the 48-year-old actor with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is given to an openly LGBTQ member of the entertainment industry for their work in fighting discrimination and promoting LGBTQ acceptance.
Hayes used his acceptance speech to throw some shade, first mocking the vice-president, joking that the GLAAD Media Awards is either Pence’s worst nightmare or a dream come true: “We will never know.”
The comedian then turned his attention to one of the biggest stories in the media, as he explained how he prepared for the ceremony. “I’ve been getting in shape for tonight with the Jussie Smollett workout,” he said. “You hire two trainers and sweat for eight weeks.”
According to Deadline, while the Pence joke received a big laugh in the room, the Smollett gag was met with a more mixed reaction.
Before finishing his speech, Hayes, who talked about how grateful he was for the honour, noted how he was the last cast member of “Will & Grace” to receive a GLAAD Media Award. “The gay one,” he said matter of factly.
