Mark McGrath has revealed he is slowly going deaf — not an uncommon occurrence for a singer but nevertheless an unsettling one.
The Sugar Ray frontman, 50, got real with the Daily Mail to reveal it’s been a “scary” discovery.
“I’m deaf now. I cannot hear any more,” McGrath admitted to the outlet after he couldn’t hear a question.
He continued: “It’s years and years of being on the road and being two feet in front of cymbals and drums. So high frequencies I can’t hear anymore. I’ll be listening to people and they’ll tell me their names and I can’t hear anymore. It’s scary because my job is hearing.”
Thankfully, McGrath says, the new generation have cutting-edge technology designed to prevent hearing loss. “They have in-ears,” he explained. “I’m dumb enough not to use them, though. I still need the sight, sounds and smells of a concert and that includes the auditory part, but unfortunately, mine’s going.”
After ET Canada shared the news on Twitter, McGrath himself clarified:
The former “Celebrity Big Brother” contestant admits that he now “worries” about his future in the music business. “You can’t repair your hearing,” he adds. “Once it goes, it goes. You can hope to stop the damage. It’s absolutely a worry of mine.”
