Could Prince William be the next 007? After three weeks of an undercover internship with top spy agencies in the U.K, he is certainly prepared to be.

On Saturday night, Kensington Palace announced that over the past three weeks, the Duke of Cambridge has been spending time with Britain’s MI5, MI6 and GCHQ to see the work the agencies do.

“Spending time inside our security and intelligence agencies, understanding more about the vital contribution they make to our national security, was a truly humbling experience,” said Prince William.

This comes at a time that Britain’s international terrorism threat level has stayed at “Severe” for the fifth year in a row. This means an attack is likely.

“These agencies are full of people from everyday backgrounds doing the most extraordinary work to keep us safe,” William added. “They work in secret, often not even able to tell their family and friends about the work they do or the stresses they face.”

While Kensington Palace won’t confirm the fine details for security reasons, ITV reports that the future King “watched live operations against terrorist cells at home and against Islamic State in Syria.”

He is also said to have spent time in the field with intelligence officers.

For the first week, William joined MI6, dealing with foreign intelligence. There he learned about risks to national security, the economy and military effectiveness.

From there, he went to the Security Service (MI5) for the second week to see counter-terrorism teams work on home soil.

The final week was with GCHQ, a 145 km helicopter commute each morning, where he learned how staff monitor communications for potential security threats.

A source tells BAZAAR.com, “The placements didn’t happen because of an invitation. This is a strong area of interest for William and something he personally asked to do and aides at Kensington Palace to arrange.”

Known only as David, the Head of Counter-Terrorism Operations at GCHQ said that William worked “exceptionally hard to embed himself in the team.”

Adding: “His Royal Highness asked some probing questions and demonstrated a real grasp of our mission. This was a rare opportunity to expose, in detail, the technical ingenuity and problem solving skills needed on a daily basis to help keep the UK safe.”
