The Spice Girls music is changing with the times even in retrospect.

Member Emma Bunton announced the girl group changed the lyrics of their 1996 chart-topping song “2 Become 1” to be more LGBTQ-friendly. “We changed the lyrics in a hotel,” she told the Gay Times. “We were travelling and we were like, ‘Absolutely, it needs to be changed.’ We felt like it needed to be more inclusive.”

“You notice that support – it’s just incredible,” she said of the love and enthusiasm from Spice Girls’ LGBTQ fanbase.

“Thank goodness we’re living at a time where everyone is supporting each other so much more now,” Bunton continued. “I feel so thankful to them – when I write or when I perform, it feels on such a more open, different level. It’s so much more inclusive and special.”

The original lyrics were “any deal that we endeavour/boys and girls feel good together” and have since been changed to “once again if we endeavour/love will bring us back together.”

The Spice Girls announced plans to reunite in 2019 for a UK stadium tour. Additional dates have been added to the schedule thanks to high ticket demand.
