The story of Chelsea Manning comes to television in “Chelsea XY”, a new Showtime documentary about the transgender whistleblower who is currently behind bars for refusing to testify to a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks, after being freed when her 35-year sentence for leaking government documents to Julian Assange was commuted by President Obama in 2017.

Filmed over the course of two years, the documentary features exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes moments with the controversial 29-year-old ex-soldier, who launched a failed Senate bid last year.

According to the official synopsis, “the film picks up on the momentous day in May when she leaves prison and follows her through her journey of discovery, while also examining her place in the conversation on national security and the fight of the transgender community for rights and visibility.

“XY Chelsea” will debut on Friday, June 7.
