Jar Jar Binks is among the most divisive characters in “Star Wars” history and George Lucas expected nothing less,
Ahmed Best, the actor that portrayed Jar Jar in “Phantom Menace” and beyond, touched on his infamous character at this year’s Star Wars Celebration Chicago event on Saturday.
“George, years ago, told me this is how it was going to be,” Best said at the convention. “He said, ‘the kids that grow up with Jar Jar, they are not going to think about all the criticism.’ It was very prescient the way he said it.”
“Everyone who was a child at the time has so much endearment towards Jar Jar,” he continued. “They looked at their parents like ‘what are you talking about?'”
Jar Jar was arguably the most despised characters in “Star Wars” history among audience members and fans. That perception has changed over time, thanks in part to fan theories presenting a more interesting story arc for the character.
Speaking of “Star” Wars, the final instalment in the current trilogy — “The Rise of Skywalker” — premieres in theatres on Dec. 20.
