Some exciting news was introduced Sunday at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, with executive producer Jon Favreau and star Pedro Pascal on hand to announce their new “Star Wars” TV series, “The Mandalorian”.
Reporting from the Chicago fan convention, Deadline notes that the series is set within the time period immediately after the events of “Return of the Jedi”, and will air on Disney’s recently announced streaming service Disney+.
According to Deadline, a trailer was shown, but was not included in the livestream coverage of the event. However, a number of first-look photos from the upcoming series have been released.
“The Mandalorian” is described by Deadline as “a gunslinger odyssey that evokes Old West tones with sci-fi trappings,” with Pascal (“Game of Thrones”, “Narcos”) starring as a bounty hunter and a gunfighter from the planet Mandalore, home of bounty hunter Boba Fett.
“Just look at the image…that’s what it’s like! Fantasy fulfillment that’s what’s like. I don’t know what I can and can’t say. The Mandorlian is a mysterious lone gunfighter on the outer reaches of the galaxy. Some would say he has low moral character… he’s badass,” said Pascal. “He’s got a lot of Clint Eastwood in him.”
Gina Carano (“Deadpool”) and Carl Weathers (“Predator”) joined the panel to discuss their characters, with Carano describing hers as “an ex-rebel shock trooper… not what you were reading online,” she said of online rumours about her character, Cara Dune. “I’ve never been a part of anything so secret. I’m a bit of a loner, not a stretch, and having a little trouble reintegrating myself into society.”
Weathers also chimed in about his character. “Of all things I’ve been in, nothing comes close to this!” said the “Rocky” star, as reported by CBR.
“The character is Greef Marda and he’s a guy that’s running this group of bounty hunters,” Weathers explained. “He’s kind of the head of this guild of bounty hunters. There seems to be a lot of kind of nefarious people… He’s looking for someone to go after a product for a client that’s very valuable… and he finds a bounty hunter named Mandalorian… and he hires this guy and sends him out there and the Mando does what needs to be done.”
In addition, the cast includes Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”), Emily Swallow (“Supernatural”), Omid Abtahi (“American Gods”), famed director Werner Herzog and three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte (“Warrior”), while directors tapped for early episodes include Deborah Chow (“Jessica Jones”), Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”), Bryce Dallas Howard (“Solemates”) and Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”).
