Victor Hugo’s ‘The Hunchback Of Notre Dame’ Sales Soar Following Devastating Cathedral Fire

Victor Hugo’s beloved novel, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, is finding new life.

Following Monday’s devastating fire at the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the book climbed the bestseller list to number one on Amazon France.

The book, called Notre-Dame de Paris in French, is the classic tale of the beautiful Esmeralda and the cathedral’s bell-ringer Quasimodo. It also inspired Disney’s animated feature of the same name.

In Hugo’s preface, as fans pointed out, he predicts that “the church will, perhaps, itself soon disappear from the face of the earth.”

Amazon France’s bestselling list was dominated by books about Notre Dame, in third place was a book about the cathedral’s history, co-written by Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, a former archbishop of Paris.

Hunchback was originally published in 1831 and became an instant favourite. Because of its popularity, the king ordered a restoration of the church in 1844.
