“Game of Thrones” is a huge hit around the world — on television AND piracy websites.
According to Mashable, stats from the data firm Muso show that the final-season premiere of the fantasy series was illegally streamed or downloaded more than 54 million times in the first 24 hours after it aired on HBO.
Nielsen tracking reported the episode got 17.4 million legal viewers in the United States during those same 24 hours.
Muso also reported that ahead of the premiere, previous seasons of “Game of Thrones” were among the top-25 most-pirated TV shows around the world during the first 11 days of April.
The biggest source of “Game of Thrones” piracy is Indian, where the premiere was pirated roughly 9.5 million times, with China following behind at 5.2 million illegal views.
